Katharagama
A Sacred Journey to the Heart of Sri Lanka
Kataragama is a sacred pilgrimage town in southern Sri Lanka, revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and indigenous Vedda people. It is famous for the Kataragama Temple, dedicated to Lord Kataragama (also known as Skanda or Murugan), a Hindu warrior deity. The town attracts thousands of devotees, especially during the annual Esala Festival, which features fire-walking, kavadi dance, and other religious rituals.
Situated near the Yala National Park, Kataragama is also known for its serene natural surroundings, including the Menik Ganga (Gem River), where pilgrims perform cleansing rituals. The town embodies a unique spiritual harmony, making it a significant cultural and religious destination in Sri Lanka.
